Drawing Tablet Used for Osu

Osu is the perfect combination between bright colors, good music, and speed. It's not only fun to play but also highly addictive and competitive.

It doesn't take learn to understand that you will have to ditch your mouse and use a tablet if you want to have a chance of beating the highscore.

Some tablets and tablet computers such as the iPad or Microsoft Surface Pro can be quite expensive. That's why most people use a cheap drawing tablet for Osu.

After reading this article, you will understand the benefits of using a tablet and which find out what the best tablets for Osu are.

Best Osu Tablets

Below are 5 tablets that I would recommend to people that are looking to play osu! on a tablet. If you want to get a tablet that can be used for both osu! and digital art as well, it would be better to choose a model from this article on tablets for artists.

1. Huion H430P

Active Area: 4.8 x 3 inch | Resolution: 5080 LPI | Pen reading speed: 233 PPS | Pressure levels: 4096

Huion might not be a familiar name, but when osu! still sold their own tablets they sourced them from this company.

Huion is known to sell cheaper drawing tablets, that are great for osu!, since you don't need most of the fancy extras.

Some people have mentioned that the surface feels a little unnatural, but once you start using it regularly you will probably get used to it quickly.

2. Wacom Intuos

Active Area: 6.0 x 3.7 inch | Resolution: 2540 LPI | Pen reading speed: 133 PPS | Pressure levels: 4096

Wacom is the most popular brand when it comes to high quality drawing tablets, so it's no surprise that one of their tablets is holding a high spot on the list.

The surface has a nice feel to it, using the pen feels very smooth, and has a very fast response time.

Additionally, the stylus doesn't require a battery, so it's relatively lightweight and feels comfortable.

When looking for a Wacom tablet for osu, stay away from the more expensive Cintiq, since you don't need the extra features that come at the higher price point.

3. XP-Pen G640

Active Area: 6 x 4 inch | Resolution: 5080 LPI | Pen reading speed: 266 PPS | Pressure levels: 8192

There are many Chinese companies that make cheap alternatives to Wacom. Although XP-Pen is one of them, their tablets are surprisingly good.

Their G640 model is thin, responsive, and pretty big for the price.

The tablet does get scratched pretty quickly though, so you might have to use a tablet cover. But overall it's still a decent choice.

4. Gaomon Osu Pad

Active Area: 6 x 5 inch | Resolution: 4000 LPI | Pen reading speed: 250 PPS | Pressure levels: 2048

Gaomon is another Chinese company that provides relatively cheap tablets.

Despite one of their models having "osu pad" in its name, they aren't the best in my opinion.

Unlike most other tablets, it has a very thin and flexible surface that can even be rolled up.

However, the biggest downside is that the active area is a square, whereas most screens are rectangular.

If you can get used to the difference in aspect ratios this tablet isn't that bad, but until that point it will feel very counterintuitive.

If you are looking for a cheap osu tablet, I would recommend the similarly priced XP-Pen.

5. Veikk S640

Active Area: 6 x 4 inch | Resolution: 5080 LPI | Pen reading speed: 230 PPS | Pressure levels: 8192

Another tablet that might objectively not be the best, but is still a valid choice considering it's the cheapest tablet on the list.

It has a simple design without any buttons, little input lag, and a thin surface.

However, since the pen is very smooth is does have a tendency to slip sometimes. So you might want to use it in combination with a tablet glove.

Osu tablet Vs Mouse

Switching from a mouse to a tablet won't double your score or accuracy overnight. However, not using a tablet can definitely hinder your improvement.

The main reason why people use drawing tablets for Osu is what's called "absolute tracking". This means that every point on the tablet corresponds directly to a point on your screen. For example, by touching the bottom left corner of your tablet the mouse cursor will also move to the bottom left corner of your screen. As a result you can quickly and accurately move from one side of the screen to the opposite side.

In contrast, a computer mouse uses "relative tracking". This means that depending on your mouse's sensitivity settings moving the mouse a certain distance might move the cursor either a little or a lot on the screen. As a result, it's pretty difficult to quickly move the cursors across the screen without losing accuracy.

Another reason why people like to use a tablet is that moving a pen over a tablet lets you make smoother motions compared to a computer mouse.

What to look for in a drawing tablet for Osu?

The price of a drawing tablet can vary a lot depending on the features, size, and quality. Many expensive tablets will try to tempt with their high pressure sensitivity, tilt sensitivity, programmable buttons, etc.

Fortunately, as an Osu player you won't need most of these features. So if you want to buy a drawing tablet purely for playing Osu can you go with one of the cheaper drawing tablets.

The three main features you want to pay attention to are:

Absolute tracking

Absolute tracking lets you quickly and accurately move the cursor from one side of the screen to the opposite side. Fortunately, most drawing tablets have absolute tracking. For some tablets you have to turn it on in the settings.

Response time

The response time is the delay between the time you touch the drawing tablet and when the cursor on the screen moves. To play Osu at the highest level you want the response time to be as low as possible. The response time depends on both the quality of the drawing tablet and your computer.

Note: using the wrong or an outdated driver for your tablet can drastically increase the response time you experience. Make sure all drivers and software are up to date.

Active area

As a digital artist you always want to get a drawing tablet with the biggest active area that your budget allows for. However, as an Osu player this is not necessarily the case. The best size of an Osu tablet is mainly personal preference. Using a big tablet is more popular because it increases accuracy but your arm will fatigue more quickly as well. A smaller tablet lets you be faster but it can be tricky to be accurate and it might feel a bit cramped.

Conclusion

There are many other Osu tablets out there. But a lot of them are just cheap drawing tablets marketed as an Osu tablet. If you want to know if a tablet can be used for playing Osu, you want to make sure that the response time is fast and the active area is neither too small nor too big.

Overall, the Huion H430P is my favorite tablet for playing Osu and is used by many other players as well. However, if you want to go for speed, you might want to try an XP-Pen or Gaomon tablet.

The Huion H430P is quite a small tablet (4.8 x 3 inch). If you want to go with something bigger, you can try a Gaomon tablet (6 x 5 inch) as well.
